Thanks for your comments and engagement. As I understand it, you have two points of contention, which I’ll address in turn.

1) I’m gonna guess that your problem with my writing about Amazon is this line “Amazon is not following private-benefit profit-maximising behaviour, but instead is focusing on meeting public and societal needs.” I fully recognise that Amazon is working to squeeze as much value out of its workforce and to dominate the online economy – that it is cut-throat in its approach to business. Yet, at the same time, what has happened with Corona has not seen them act in the way that the discourse around the market suggests. We could reconcile this behaviour with profit-maximising behaviour, but then our definition of “profit-maximising” would have to include a great amount of business autonomy and strategy (which has generally not been present in economic discourse and doesn’t mesh well with notions of “the market”).

2) Supply and demand are going to be reflected in posted prices, but they don’t determine price – the mechanism simply isn’t there. Course, again, we run into business strategy – Cartier would prefer to destroy watches ( ) rather than have them sold at knockdown prices.

We are living in an era of disaster monopoly capitalism (DMC) where the major corporations use branding and gestures to partly conceal their overwhelming concern for the maintenance of capital accumulation. The postmodern market discourse tends to downplay the behaviour of states and networks: the amount of regulation and taxation still being a choice? With regard to pricing, it still sometimes operates conventionally in major British supermarkets where the cost of bin bags has become extortionate due to high demand. All caveats aside, your emphasis on crisis is excellent given that DMC is driving ecological, economic and biological problems on a global scale.
